As long as an anime is one of these three things: funny, mind-twisting(usually of the horror kind), or great animation/interesting story— I’ll probably like it. Since I have started quite a few anime, I’ll just state my opinions on the one’s I’ve finished ):S (beware, this is going to be long!)
Hetalia: I don’t care if you like it or not, but I adore this anime. It’s a funny series if you like the humor in it, and the fanbase (honestly, including me) can get annoying. The manga, in my opinion, has nicer art, but I watched the anime first. A very quick anime since each episode is only five minutes long. But as I said in the beginning, I don’t mind if you don’t like it. Please don’t bash me for my opinion.
Bokurano: I bet many of you guys have never heard of this series. Back about a year or two ago, I found some re-done version of the second ending with different characters, and I was intrigued, and eventually found the anime’s opening, which I’m convinced has one of the best anime opening songs ever. I looked it up on Wikipedia. The premise is that fifteen kids, 14 seventh-graders and a fourth grader, find a man at summer camp who let’s them play a game of piloting a robot, if they sign up. Thinking it’s only a game, they willingly sign up, but find out it more than real: the survival of earth depends on them, and they have to defeat other robots that threaten to destroy the planet. Sounds like a usual mecha drab right? The catch is, for the cost of victory, the kid piloting the robot that time dies. A mecha-drama originally written as a manga by Mohiro Kitoh (he wrote Shadow Star Narutaru) The anime is only 24 episodes, and the manga has been released in english, 11 volumes. It has no dub. described as “Making Evangelion look like Care Bears” it is a very sad, somewhat horrific anime, especially when you find out more about the robot fights in the middle of the series. Depending on which you start with, you’ll probably prefer that one, since the two are different in many ways from each other. (I prefer the anime, the manga was too "adult’ for my tastes) I loved it a lot, and do not judge it if you didn’t like Shadowstar, from what I know some people think highly of Bokurano and lowly of the controversy of Shadowstar. It is very good if you like horror, and even though you can kind of predict what’s going to happen (since they tell you in the second episode) It always kept me on edge and I didn’t stop watching it until I finished it.
PPGZ: the first anime I ever watched in Japanese (y’know….not 4kids and whatever was on TV) back in 2008-2009. Yes it is cheesy, and I HATE the dub, but It’s enjoyable if you don’t think of how much you praised the show when you were a kid (if you did) Though I have to admit, the ending was kind of a terrible Deus Ex Machima (spelled right?), for lack of a better term.
Panty and Stocking: It’s generally taking Gainax’s special blender, take some of the leftovers of Gurren-Lagann and FLCL, putting in three spoons of Powerpuff girls, 3/4 of a cup of Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, a cup of South Park, A half a teaspoon of Invader Zim, And a teaspoon of Ren and Stimpy’s humor, then set it to “out-of control anime.” Wait three minutes, and you finally get a drink of this thirteen-episode show. Sure, it’s not the funniest show ever, but it kept me entertained, and I NEVER took it seriously. If you don’t like over-the-top gross-out/vulgar/sex jokes, you may be allergic to the combination and you might want to keep away until you get the proper medication.
Dragon Half: The anime was never complete, but I read the entire manga. It’s funny, but it is an ecchi (a very cute one, but still an ecchi) watch the two episodes that were made (and dubbed, but the final part of episode two is missing from youtube, last I checked) and if you like it, go read it.
Junjou Romantica: A very well done yaoi about three different couples and their relationships. I probably don’t need to continue, since most likely many of you don’t like yaoi, but i found it cute. It has no dub, as far as I know.
Soul Eater: A perfect balance of things in an action-anime that actually ENDS. The characters are pretty likable, and the fighting just looks COOL. It does suffer from some things in it’s genre, as a reviewer said, but at least it’s only 51 episodes unlike A 700 EPISODE KIDS SHOW WITH THE SAME REPETITIVE PLOT UNTIL THEY GET TO THE NEXT GYM AND- oh, sorry. Anyways, Soul Eater is pretty good.
Paranoia Agent: This show is one I praise A LOT. It is very well written, well animated, and very realistic…. for the most part. It’s only thirteen episodes long, and the opening and ending themes are both creepy and fun to watch. There’s not really a lot of humor, and The last episode broke my heart. If you REEEEAALLLYYY didn't like the scene in Elfen Lied where they kill the puppy, you will NOT like the reason that everything in the series happened. It does have a bit of nudity and such in it, and it is an anime that you will not understand if you don’t pay attention and think about what it’s about inside, but I recommend it to anyone who likes a good study of psychology.
Azumanga Daioh: one of the first anime I watched as a dub not done by 4kids. It’s funny, and at least somewhat realistic, the only boy aside from random unnamed ones in the series is Mr. Kimura (ie. the teacher that likes High school girls but has somehow not been fired) mainly only focusing on the girls (and two other teachers) and their friendship. It’s been a while since I watched the anime, but I’ve been reading the manga.
Pokemon Special/Adventures: SOOOOOO much better than the anime. They’ve been releasing the manga in NA for the past two-three years, every two months. It’s enjoyable if you like a somewhat darker pokemon.
Ouran High School Host Club: I found this series charming and hilarious. As JesuOtaku roughly said, “If you can get past all the manservice in this, it is very enjoyable.” And that it is. Not to sound too much like the fangirl I am, but my favorite characters have to be Honey and Mori : )
At this point, I’ve been watching Ghost Stories hilarious dub, Black Butler, FLCL, Lucky Star, Ranma 1/2 and The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya (different from the actual series) and started reading Soul Eater’s manga and Fullmetal Alchemist.
My waiting list is Death note, Detective Conan, Earth Maiden Arjuna, The Tales of stuff (Vesperia’s movie, Symphonia’s OVA, and Phantasia, the Abyss and Eternia’s anime), Baccano, Higurashi, and Revolutionary Girl Utena. Some animes I have on hold that I still love are Gurren-Lagann, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, FMA Brotherhood, and Reborn!. Naruto, in my opinion, is okay.
I’ve noticed that not a lot of people have mentioned awful anime or anime they don’t like… aside for Hetalia. But one Anime I advise you to never watch, is EIKEN. Dear lord, it was trying to be some sort of ecchi or Hentai or something, but it did it very VERY badly. Many of the character have unnaturally sized breasts, and the most endowed was a 12-year old. I was stupid enough not to listen to the reviewers warnings, and found I couldn’t even get through one episode. If you have heard of this series, and feel curious to find out more about it, DONT. JUST DONT. It wasn’t worth it.
